Senior Friendly Hospital Initiatives in Toronto
Seniors account for 63% of acute inpatient days and 43% of provincial health expenditures in Ontario. Hospitalization can be pivotal in a senior's life. It can add years to life or create complications. Without senior friendly processes in place, for example, seniors have higher rates of adverse events, surgical complications, and nosocomial infection than younger people. They are at risk of hospital acquired delirium, increased length of stay, re-admission and loss of the capacity for independent living. The RGPs of Ontario have developed a framework to guide the development of senior friendly hospitals in order to optimize the health of seniors and the use of health systems resources.
We are using the framework to build a senior friendly hospital toolkit for hospital planners and service developers. The toolkit is a compendium of senior friendly initiatives taking place across the RGPToronto Network. The toolkit is a work in progress but we think that you will find it helpful.
